Located on the coast of California, Ventura is positioned to the northwest of Los Angeles. It sits in a narrow valley with steep terrain on either side, and the Ventura River runs through its western part. The city's northern area is bordered by the steep foothills of Ventura, while its eastern portion is situated on a flat alluvial coastal plain that runs along the western edge of the Oxnard Plain. Several Barrancas extend from the slopes to the Santa Clara River, which serves as the city's southern boundary. The Santa Clara River Valley begins at Saticoy, a historic settlement.
Ventura has been inhabited by the Chumash Native Indians and other groups for over 10,000 years. The city was named after Mission San Buenaventura, which was founded by Junipero Serra in 1782 after the arrival of Spanish missionaries. During the Mexican secularization of the Californian missions, San Buenaventura was granted to Don José de Arnaz by Governor Pio Pico as Rancho Ex-Mission San Buenaventura, and a small settlement grew there. After the American Invasion of California, San Buenaventura became a city in 1866. Ventura experienced significant development and expansion due to the enormous oil boom of the 1920s and the subsequent post-World War II economic boom.
